The Knight at Dawn

We have been enjoying getting to know Jack and Annie a little more and following them on their adventure in the Medieval Times! We are reading, dramatizing, and writing about the chapters! We are also dramatizing "life and times," pretending to be at a castle feast, and pretending to invade a castle with catapults!

Jack fell into the moat.

Jack splashed in the moat.

They escaped from the dungeon.

The knight stared at Jack and Annie.

The knight dismounted his horse.

Annie hoped that she picked the right book.

Math!

We have been having a lot of fun working on counting, writing numbers, and manipulating shapes! We do a lot of Buddy work during math, so we are also working on taking turns and helping our buddies in a nice way! When we finish our centers we can choose a game that we already know from our "Can-Do shelf."

Here are some pictures from our centers.
The Numeral Game. Ask how we play this buddy game!

Dice Dot Painting. We roll each colored die and make that many dots with the matching color.

Race To Trace. We are working on number ID, number formation, and turn taking with this game!

Working together on fun challenges with Pattern Blocks!

Number line Hopscotch! A fun way to practice counting through that first tricky group of teens!

Class Photos

I am sending home class pictures in your child's folder today! Enjoy :)

Math!

We are practicing counting with one to one correspondence by dumping out our "inventory bags" and putting each item back in one at a time while we say each number. Then we record our numbers, and at the end we check our answers with a buddy (and re-check any bags that we disagree on).

We are getting good at identifying big numbers (1-30) with help from our group! Here is I Have Who Has in action!

We are using our creativity and cognitive flexibility to change triangles into something related to our Medieval Times theme. Check out this catapault!

We also started practicing writing our numbers! Here are the poems we use to remember 1-5.
-Start at the top and down we run, that's how you make the number one!
-Around the track and back, two two!
-Around the tree, around the tree, that's how you make the number three!
-Down, across, and down once more. That's how you make the number four!
-A back, a belly, and a hat. Number five sits on a mat!

Ask how we play our new game called Stackers! It is a direction giving/following game that we play in pairs.

Knights and Castles Background Knowledge week!

This week we are preparing for our next Magic Tree House story by reading, writing, and dramatizing about the Medieval times. We are reading a lot of nonfiction and interactive slideshows about knights and castles, then writing facts in our fact books! We are pretending that we are kings, queens, servants, etc. We are also making props and scenery to use in our dramatizing centers next week!

Here are a few of the slides we have had so far:

Math!

We are having lots of fun practicing our counting in math. We are being very careful when we count, practicing our one to one correspondence. Ask your child how we play these counting games.

Roll A Tower

Make A Train

We are also practicing number ID with harder numbers- up to 30! This is I Have Who Has.

Ask your child about this game- Ten Frame Match

This week we are being creative with a new shape- the rhombus!

We love this song for practice with rote counting:

Ask how we play Freeze on the Number!
