Math!

Check out what we have been up to in math!

We are fishing for teen numbers, recording our number, and figuring out what one less would be!

In the cup/Out of the cup- We play this game with a buddy. We always start with the same number of cubes (in the photo it is ten). One person hides some cubes under the cup and their buddy has to figure out how many are hiding based on the number that are out of the cup! This is a fun game to practice at home (start with 3-10 cubes, depending on your child!).

Ladybug addition. We are dumping out a container of double sided counters and adding the ones that land red side up to the ones that land yellow side up! .

Changing numbers. One person starts by taking a "fix it strip" and telling their buddy how many bears to put on the board (the number at the bottom). Next, they ask their buddy to change the number of bears (moving up the fix it strip). The buddy must change the number by adding some or taking some away, not clearing the board and counting out a new set.

Literacy centers

This week we are finishing Sunset of the Sabertooth! We have shifted to reading 2 chapters on Mondays and Wednesdays. On our reading days we don't write, leaving more time for other literacy activities before lunch. We will now write on days that we don't read, requiring children to remember the chapters from the day before (we are working on strengthening our memories!). On Fridays we will read one chapter, write, then work on a project while I conference with individual students. We will go through their work from the week, reflect on how it went, and think of a new learning goal for the following week!

Here are a few of our literacy centers from this week!
Ask how we play "Woolly Mammoth" for sight word practice (it is like "Moose" in math). You can make this game for practice at home!

We are bundled up to dramatize Sunset of the Sabertooth!

We are playing Who Am I? (It is like the game Headbandz). One partner puts a card in his headband (this week something about the ice age or caves) and the other gives clues to get their partner to guess who they are!

Snow! We are making "snow" with shaving cream and baking soda!

Silly Sentences. We are practicing decoding words and deciding if they make real or silly sentences.

Creative Writing. We are writing stories about what life would be like in the Ice Age.

Math

In math we are working on counting to higher numbers and starting from numbers other than 1! We are also starting to practice combining numbers. Here are some of our centers this week!

Counting by ones on the number line.

Ask how we use our number bracelets!

Math Magic! Partners pick a total number of bears, then one person hides some of them under the cup ("magically" making some disappear). The other person has to figure out how many must have disappeared using the total number and the number still on the table. Partners work together to write a corresponding number sentence!

Literacy centers

Here are some of our centers from this week!

Word Pattern match game- ask your child how to play this small group game!

I Have Who Has: sight word edition. This is one way we are practicing sight words at school!

We listened to Snow Dog, Go Dog and recorded our favorite parts

At Calling Base Camp we pretend to be Jack and Annie exploring in the Ice Age and report to our buddy what we found by spelling the words.

We are working on opinion writing. We have to remember to support our idea with a reason!

What can we make with the number 100?

One of our favorite 100th day activities was making pictures out of the number 100. Look what we made!
